“Beacon” emerged from a patching session with a module recently hand-assembled from a kit. After some subtle modulation, some unconventional processing, and some judiciously applied effects, suddenly I was standing on a desolate nighttime beach — the surf crashing in the distance, a lighthouse swinging its beam through the mist above. My perspective drifted out over the ocean, up to the stars, then out past the rim of the galaxy: I found myself listening to an orbiting signal beacon cast its lonely song through the emptiness, over the washing waves of the solar wind.
